Challenges and Legal Issues Associated With Wrecks and Derelicts’ Removal in Nigerian Waters
Abstract
The paper explores the challenges and legal issues associated with wrecks and derelicts removal from the Nigerian waters. It aims at identifying the various obstacles militating against the removal of wrecks and derelicts from Nigerian waters so as to find the lasting solutions to the problems of wrecks and derelict’s removal in Nigeria. The research method adopted is the doctrinal research method supplemented with information obtained from various maritime chambers, shipping companies and governmental maritime agencies. Research findings revealed that the cost of wrecks and derelicts’ removal in Nigeria have become more expensive and complicated. It is therefore an issue of great concern to Nigeria. Hence, the paper among others, recommends the domestication of the Nairobi international convention on the removal of wrecks 2007 in Nigeria without further delay. It also stresses the urgent need to review, amend and strengthen our domestic wrecks removal laws.
